Bet you thought that since the election is over, the new Mayor, and new member of Council are in place that we would just go away. Well, we thought about it but......
digging into "dirt" is too enticing to stay away from. Plus, we think it's a little funny that our own Mayor would forgo paying her per capita taxes, 2 years in a row. But, she's not the only one on Council who has forgone paying their per capita taxes in 2020 and 2021. Keep reading, because you already know we have the evidence to back up what we're saying.
Now, the Per Capita tax is greater than just $10. This $10 represents just the Cities portion of the tax. The following minutes are from the 01/20/2021 Council meeting, where Jim Roha makes mention that this tax could now cost those individuals up to $200.
You might be thinking, well that was 2020, surely Jaime and Larry paid in 2021. Especially considering that Jaime was running a campaign to be Mayor.
WRONG.
What might be even more comical is the fact that these 2 individuals voted to exonerate the City Treasure for Collections of said 2021 taxes. Larry has actually done this twice, considering that he didn't pay in 2020 either, but still voted to exonerate the treasurer to collect. In case you missed the part that stated how Larry voted on this on 01/20/2021;
Then, the motion appears again on 01/19/2022. (This is a yearly thing, since clearly folks can't just pay their taxes)
On the off chance you don't understand the terminology that Council is utilizing here, we'll clue you in.
Exonerate means the following;
Essentially, they gave the City treasurer permission to turn over unpaid per capita taxes to a collection agency. The City utilizes Sharp Collection agency, which is an outside company and they have the ability to attach to wages, if necessary.
Now, let's look at the total here for a moment. In the meeting on 01/19/2022 Jim Roha states that the almost $18,000 that the City is due from 2021 Per Capita taxes could, in 2 1/2 years time, buy a police cruiser. There are probably a decent bit of other projects that the City could pay for with this money. Apparently we need to be like Jaime on this one though, just find someone else to foot the bill for you and reap the benefits. If you're unaware of what exactly that statement means, you haven't read the other blog posts. Feel free to do so, you might find them pretty enlightening. You might even wonder how the heck someone who has such a past would even qualify to be Mayor, let alone actually win an election for such.
The minutes from the 01/19/2022 meeting have not been typed and put on the City website yet, but we will provide the link, should you care to watch.
The final tidbit we'll leave you with is the total amount that the City is due from 2020 & 2021 Per Capita taxes. If you would like to obtain the list(s) for yourself, you may do so by filling out and sending in a right to know request to the courthouse.
2020 delinquent Per Capita taxes;
2021 delinquent Per Capita taxes;
If you're curious, the total due over both years, after penalty, would be $36,939. Once again, there are probably a few things that you could think of that the City could do with that money. So, maybe we should say "Hey Mayor (& Deputy Mayor), it's time you pay your share!
