If you've been following anything that is going on with Meadville City Council, you likely know that there is a zoning ordinance draft that Council will be discussing over the coming months.
What kind of things are in this ordinance? Well, considering this draft is 179 pages long cover to cover, there is a lot covered in this zoning ordinance. We're going to touch on just a few items, but encourage everyone to look over the draft for themselves.
You might be thinking, so what, they want to do some updates. But, how do you feel about the city telling you size, color, and siding direction of your property?
Can they really dictate this sort of thing? If this zoning moves forward, yes they can.
Wow, those are some pretty strict stipulations. Wonder if Section B #2 would impact future plans for Common Roots?
Lets take a quick look at the proposed zoning map, shall we?
Okay, okay. Well and good, but, surely this doesn't mean they can tell us what type of roof we can have, the orientation of our front door, or location of our garage, right?! Wrong.
What about some other things going on within the city? Gardens, businesses, community centers?
As you can see by just these few screenshots, there is a lot of information in here and a lot of stipulations. What happens though, if our current property isn't up to these regulations? Glad you asked;
It sounds like we're good, unless we want to make certain changes to said property.
Who would be in charge of administrating this?
Does this mean we have to bring more staff on within the city? It could, but we're not completely sure so we aren't going to assume anything here.
What happens if we violate this code?
What should we all do right now? Read the zoning ordinance draft and understand what they're trying to put forward for Meadville. Show up at the meetings and ask questions, or listen to Council questions. As a reminder, here is the timeline for Council. We are also including Zoning Amendment Process.
It's important for us to be aware of changes that the city would like to bring forth. Some of these changes are stemming from the My Meadville project, which has a lot of the same players as Common Roots, Vote for Meadville, and Crawford County United.
Why do we have these lengthy read changes coming through all at the same time? The climate action plan, land banks, home rule charter, and this zoning ordinance. Next will be the rental registration and inspection program. We realize these things are listed as Council priorities, but the hasty approach should sound alarm bells for some. We need time to read, understand and question all of the information we are seeing come to light.
Finally, we're going to list again the proposed Council priorities;
If you're not paying attention yet, it might be time for you to wake up and open your eyes to the facts of the matter.
