We've been digging into some of the groups that Joe Tompkins, his wife Julie Wilson, and their pals Autumn Vogel and husband Lee Scandinaro have created. It's not a secret that we've also looked into a lot that Joe has been involved in. At this point, it would be seemingly easier to think of things that he is not involved in, and/or influencing. Today though, we were sent some interesting insight. Fact, Joe Tompkins and his wife Julie Wilson work at the college.
Currently you will see Julie is on sabbatical, we're not sure why, and that's not the point of this, so we aren't going to look into that.
Second fact, Joe and the whole group publicly preach about everyone needing affordable housing, right?
But, do they feel the same way for the college students who pay their wages?
What is the cost of housing at the college anyways?
How long is a semester? According to Allegheny's website;
15 weeks is equal to approx. 4 months. This would equal out to $909.75/month, for a standard room with double occupancy. If you wanted to live independently, you'd be looking at about $1,107.50/month. With the move in and out dates we found on the website, it's indicative that a year is not a calendar year, it is a combination of 2 semesters, so approx. 8 months. Meaning the cost would be the same per month.
For fun, we looked at 1 bedroom apartments near the college to see what the average was.
The alarming thing is that these students don't get a choice.
Want to know what the professors make? Keep in mind, these are just based on reported salaries from others, these, by no means, represent actual figures, as we haven't seen their individual tax returns. However, they give a good picture for our readers.
Joe is an assistant professor, and Julie is an associate professor as you may recall seeing from above.
Oddly enough, Joe seems to take issue with his employer and how unfair it is that they don't pay taxes to the city. However, he doesn't seem to have an issue collecting a check from them, and the students who pay higher than average "rent" prices.
Joe stated the following in a November 18, 2020 budget hearing;
"Mr. Tompkins noted that Allegheny College, his employer, talks about supporting the City but rarely puts its money where its mouth is and that he would like to see them, Meadville Medical Center, and Wesbury need to step up."
Maybe Joe should start putting his money where his mouth is, and offer to personally help the "cost burdened" renters who allegedly don't have a choice of where to rent aside from in run down rentals.

Maybe he could also help the college students who don't get too much of a choice when it comes to rentals. Oh, and maybe he should start showing up to teach his classes rather than attending all of these meetings to dictate how the city runs.
